The Little Girl with Glee

(for Irish, as I was combing through files of memories in den haag)
The afternoon wore on
With platitudes and applauses.
The day before, the little girl
Sat on the chair by the kitchen
Looking out in the garden
Thinking of the days
Happily spent in carefree childhood.
With a pixie-like smile
She laughingly receives her diploma;
Going out into the hallway
She beams for the camera
With near tears in her eyes.
She sees her friends in glee
And they clown around
Throwing congratulations in the air.
Outside, she poses
Hugging the column bearing the name, ISS.
With elfin hair, she looks into the camera
Her eyes belying the sadness
Which she never dared to reveal.
She gives the column a bear hug
And sits outside in one of the benches.
Holding her bag of goodies
She sits in bitter-sweet dejection…
Thinks up of an idea,
Stands by the canal
Striking another pose
Imitating the great sweet devil herself,
Then walks down the corner
And gives a big hug to the air
Like Audrey Hepburn in Moon River.
She asks for her pictures
To be taken along Bazarlaan
Hugging the lamppost with one of her feet
And spends the next fifteen minutes
In tomfoolery with friends.
By the door, she nearly breaks down
Her face crumpling…

i see her still, albeit less and less as each day pass. she says she is doing fine, though i’m not really sure. she won’t say what’s on her mind. she sends her regards as casual as she can, i don’t really understand. she brightens up at thought of you, wears her cap and grabs her bike. she’s off to the bend to wait for her huckleberry friends.
